How to choose sockets for impact wrenches

Tecnici AMES

On an impact wrench use only impact sockets, with the exact nut size and the same square drive as the machine: 3/8", 1/2", 3/4" or 1" in the collection. Chrome hand sockets are not made for impacts and can shatter. For deeper nuts you need long sockets, and for awkward spots extension bars and universal joints, always of the impact type.

The types

  • Hexagon impact sockets: short (standard) or long (deep). The deep one is needed when the nut sits on a long stud. One example is the Fervi long impact socket against the standard series.
  • Magnetic sockets: they hold the nut or screw, useful when working at height or in places where you cannot use your other hand, like the DeWalt 50 mm magnetic hexagon socket.
  • RIBE and XZN male sockets: for screws with a multi-spline head, like the Fervi XZN male impact socket.
  • Extension bars: they lengthen the socket to reach the nut, also in a version for impact sockets.
  • Universal joints and adapters: the universal joint lets you work at an angle, the adapter steps from one square drive to another (for example from 1/2" to 3/4").
  • Socket holders and couplings: for connecting sockets or inserts to machines with different drives, such as 1/4" hex or SDS-Plus.
  • Sets and ranges: assortments of sockets in one pack, with a range of sizes ready to hand.

How to choose by job

Use Recommended type Why
Fitting and removing wheels, structural work Standard impact sockets, 1/2" or 3/4" drive They stand up to impacts and come in the most commonly used sizes.
Nuts on long or recessed studs Long (deep) socket The nut goes in deep without an extension bar.
Work at height or in an awkward position Magnetic socket The nut stays in the socket while you tighten it.
Hard-to-reach nuts Impact extension bar or universal joint You reach the nut without changing position.
Several machines with different drives Adapters and sets A single kit for different machines.

The features to look at

Square drive. It must be identical to that of the machine. In the collection you will find 3/8", 1/2", 3/4" and 1". A larger drive withstands higher torque; for large nuts on powerful machines you need a large drive.

Opening size. This is the hexagon size of the nut. If the socket is loose on the nut, the nut gets damaged; a socket with a rounded-out opening must be discarded.

Length. In the collection the sockets and extension bars range from about 50 to 250 mm. The longer the socket, the more it flexes: if you do not need the depth, use the standard series.

Outside diameter. From 21 to 54 mm in the example sizes: it matters when the nut is close to another part and the socket must not foul it.

Type. Standard or deep impact, super-magnetic, for impact sockets: the marking "impact" is what counts.

Brand and compatibility. Fervi, Makita, DeWalt, Milwaukee and Unifix are among the brands in the collection. The square drive is standardised, so sockets are generally compatible across different brands.

Size examples. For common nuts a hexagon impact socket of the right size is enough, like the DeWalt Impact Ready 8 mm nut socket. For a complete set, an assortment of sizes with the same drive is the better choice: that way you do not have to look for the missing size at every nut.

Common mistakes

  • Using chrome hand sockets on the impact wrench. They are brittle under impacts and can shatter dangerously.
  • Extension bars and universal joints that are not impact-rated. Even just one of these components can break under impact.
  • A size that is almost right. A socket that is slightly too large rounds off the nut.
  • Too long a chain of accessories. An extension bar plus a universal joint plus a long socket absorb the impacts and make the machine work poorly.
  • Using sockets with a cracked or rounded-out opening. Discard them.

Frequently asked questions

What drive do I need for my impact wrench?

The same square drive as the machine, for example 1/2" or 3/4". If it does not match, use an impact adapter.

Chrome or impact sockets?

On an impact wrench, impact sockets. Chrome ones are for hand use with a ratchet spanner.

When do I need the long socket?

When the nut is on a long or recessed stud. Otherwise use the standard socket.

How do I keep the socket on the nut?

With a magnetic socket, or with a retaining ball or ring on the drive.
