A portable ladder is a stepladder, extension, telescopic or combination ladder in aluminium or steel, for temporary work at height.

What it is for

Used for work at height, where access and restraint must be ensured for the whole job and for pruning branches, hedges and trees.

How to use it

Before use, check the feet, steps and locking devices; open a stepladder fully, with the spreaders taut, on a stable surface. Set a leaning ladder at an angle of about one in four and make sure it extends beyond the landing point. Climb facing the steps with three points of contact, without exceeding the load capacity or moving the ladder with someone on it.

Freestanding stepladders comply with standard EN 131 (parts 1, 2 and 4 for articulated ladders), with a safety chain or strap that limits how far they open.
