How to choose core drilling equipment: connection and water
To choose core drilling equipment, start from the core drill you have: every accessory (core bit, adapter, extension, stand) must have the right connection and thread for that machine. Then decide whether you work wet, with water always running, or dry, with a vacuum connected. In the collection you will find connections such as 1"1/4 UNC, M16 and SDS Plus, and accessories for Sea Technology, SPIT, Milwaukee and other brands of core drills.
The types
- Diamond core bits: the tool that cuts the hole. They are chosen by diameter, by the material to be drilled and by wet or dry use.
- Adapters: they connect the core bit to the spindle of the core drill, also in a quick-release version such as the Sea Technology adapter. Thread and connection are what count.
- Extensions: for deep holes, to be added between the core drill and the core bit.
- Stands and support frames: they hold the core drill steady and straight, fixed with an anchor or with a vacuum plate, such as the Milwaukee MXF DR255TV core drill stand.
- Motors: the motor units for core drills, such as the Sea Technology motors SSR 38 and SEM 26.
- Water systems: hand pumps and accessories to deliver water to the core bit.
- Vacuums, antistatic hoses and dry core drilling kits: they collect the dust while you drill.
- Centring plates and bits: such as the Sea Technology centring plate, to start at the right point.
How to choose according to the job
| Use | What to choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hole in a wall or floor slab, repeated work | Stand-mounted core drill, wet core bit | The stand ensures a straight hole and less effort. |
| Deep hole | Extension suited to the core bit | It lets you reach the depth without changing machine. |
| Floor with no anchoring | Stand with vacuum plate | It is fixed by suction, without drilling the substrate. |
| Enclosed room or renovation | Dry core drilling with vacuum | No water to manage; the dust goes into a suitable vacuum. |
| Occasional work with a handheld machine | Core bit and SDS Plus adapter | For small holes, where a stand is not needed. |
| Continuous core drilling | Dedicated core bits, such as the Sea Technology ones | It is a separate line: ask for confirmation of compatibility before ordering. |
The features to look at
- Connection and thread: the element that decides compatibility. In the collection you will find 1"1/4 UNC, 5/8" M16, M16, M14, M12, 1/2" and SDS Plus. Before ordering, compare the machine's connection with the accessory's.
- Compatibility: many accessories are for specific models (SPIT SD160 or SD17 core drills, SPIT AC vacuums, Sea Technology SEADRILL). Universal ones are marked as such.
- Length: accessories range from 75 to 420 mm; for greater depths you need an extension.
- Weight: stands and frames range from 9 to over 35 kg. If you carry them by hand on site, weight matters.
- Material: steel for the elements that bear stress, aluminium to reduce weight (stands with a steel base).
- Pack size: single pieces or packs of 2 and 5, useful for consumables.
Common mistakes
- Ordering the core bit without checking the connection. A different thread means either an extra adapter or a return.
- Not checking whether the core bit is meant for wet or dry use. They are different uses and the data sheet says which.
- Not fixing the stand properly. A stand that moves ruins the core bit and the hole.
- Forcing the core bit. You start with a light feed until the core bit has cut its groove, then proceed at constant pressure.
- Forgetting the water or the vacuum. When working wet, the water is turned on before starting and stays on; when working dry, the vacuum is always connected.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know whether a core bit fits my core drill?
Check the connection on the machine's plate or in its manual and compare it with the core bit's. If they do not match you need an adapter.
Is it better to core drill wet or dry?
Wet, the water cools the core bit and suppresses dust. Dry is used where water cannot be managed, but you need a suitable vacuum connected.
What is the vacuum plate for?
To fix the stand to the floor by suction, when you cannot or do not want to drill holes for anchors.
Can I extend the core bit?
Yes, with a compatible core bit extension. Check the thread and the length.
