Frequently asked questions: Single-Phase Industrial Wet and Dry Vacuums
What is a single-phase industrial vacuum for solids and liquids used for?
It collects chips, dust and liquids in workshops, metal fabrication shops and laboratories, where a broom or a household vacuum cleaner cannot cope with the job. The single-phase motor plugs into a standard power socket, so it works in most workshops without dedicated wiring. The tank holds both dry material and water, avoiding repeated manual cleaning.
What is the difference between vacuuming solids and vacuuming liquids?
For solids, the vacuum uses a bag or filter that retains dust and chips. For liquids, it needs a float that shuts off suction when the tank fills, so water does not reach the motor. On mixed models these devices are fitted or replaced according to the data sheet. Before use, check that the correct system is fitted.
How do I choose the tank capacity of a single-phase vacuum?
Capacity depends on how much material you produce per shift. For quick workshop clean-ups, tanks of 10 or 30 litres are enough, such as the Fervi A040/301 30 l wet and dry vacuum. For large quantities of chips and liquids, a 60 or 80 litre model is better, such as the Fervi A040/803 80 l wet and dry vacuum with 3 motors, which needs emptying less often. A large tank is heavier to move, however.
How many motors should a workshop vacuum have?
The number of motors affects the suction power available. On models with two or three motors, such as the Fervi A040/602 60 l wet and dry vacuum with 2 motors, suction is generally stronger and handles heavy chips and large volumes of liquid better. For cleaning small residues, a single motor is sufficient. Also compare the power in watts, because the number of motors alone does not describe the machine.
Can I use a single-phase vacuum for wood or metal dust?
Fine wood or metal dust, and harmful materials, require a suitable filter and a closed collection system. D.Lgs. 81/2008 (the Italian workplace safety law) requires you to assess the risk from dust and to choose equipment suited to the work. A standard solids and liquids vacuum must not be used for fine dust without a dedicated filter. Areas at risk of explosion require specific ATEX machines, which are in another category of the catalogue.
How do I use a liquid vacuum safely in the workshop?
Before vacuuming, check that the filter and float are clean and correctly fitted. Do not vacuum flammable liquids or solvents with a model not intended for this use. Connect the machine to a socket protected by a residual current device, and keep the hose away from live cables. Empty the tank before it fills to the brim, and do not leave stagnant water in the drum.
Which vacuum should I choose for lathe or milling machine chips?
For metal chips, choose a sturdy drum and a nozzle of a diameter suited to the waste material, such as the Nilfisk Attix 33 professional drum vacuum or the Nilfisk Multi II 30T drum vacuum. Check the drum material and hose diameter in the data sheet. Clean the filter at the end of each shift, because fine chips clog it quickly.
