How to choose a toolbox: load capacity, dimensions and latches

Tecnici AMES

The right toolbox depends on how much your tools weigh and how you move it. For a few hand tools for home use, a lightweight plastic toolbox with a capacity of around 8 kg is enough; if you work on site or in maintenance every day, you need sturdier models with a capacity of 25 to 35 kg and metal latches. If you travel often with a lot of equipment, it is worth getting a toolbox with wheels or a telescopic handle.

The types

  • Plastic toolboxes with tray: the most common, for hand tools and small parts. Some have the nominal length in inches in the name, such as the One Touch 16" or the 19".
  • Metal-Plastic toolboxes: a body combining metal and plastic parts, designed for heavier use than plastic alone.
  • Structural Foam and FatMax: sturdy ranges for professional use, such as the Structural Foam FatMax and the Cantilever 18", with trays that open out cantilever-style.
  • Multilevel and large-capacity toolboxes: on several levels or with a large compartment, such as the PRO-Stack with large handle, for those with a lot of tools.
  • Tool sets and cases: toolboxes supplied with tools already inside (such as the 24-piece basic set) and electrician's cases.
  • Modular systems: adapters and stackable containers, such as the ToughSystem adapter, for attaching several units together.

How to choose by job

Job What to get Why
Occasional home use Plastic toolbox, 16-19" Light weight, low cost, enough for jobs around the house.
Electrician or maintenance engineer Case or toolbox with trays and compartments Small parts kept tidy and quick access.
Building site Sturdy toolbox with metal latches and high capacity Knocks, dust and heavy loads.
Team that moves around a lot Model with wheels and telescopic handle It can be pulled along without lifting the weight.
Workshop with power tools Stackable modular system Several containers can be carried together.

The features to look at

  • Load capacity: in the collection it ranges from 7.5 to 35 kg. Choose a value above the weight of your tools, because the handle only supports the load if the toolbox is properly closed.
  • Dimensions: lengths from about 370 to 660 mm, widths from 130 to 554 mm, heights from about 220 to 310 mm. Check that your longest tools fit and that the toolbox fits in your vehicle.
  • Empty weight: the gross weight ranges from under 3 kg up to about 20 kg for the large models. It matters if you have to carry it by hand.
  • Wheels and drawers: found only on some models (single, double or triple drawer). They are useful with a lot of equipment, but they add bulk and weight.
  • Handle: plastic, metal, dual-material or telescopic. The dual-material handle is more comfortable to hold for long periods.
  • Hinge and latches: a metal hinge lasts longer than a plastic one; metal latches stand up better to knocks and daily use.

Common mistakes

  • Exceeding the load capacity: the handle or the hinges give way and the tools fall.
  • Choosing only by the inches in the name: two 19" toolboxes can have very different depth and capacity.
  • Putting heavy tools in the tray: the tray is for small parts; heavy items go in the bottom.
  • Ignoring the latches: a weak latch opens in transit. If one breaks, it can be replaced with spare parts.
  • Getting a toolbox that is too big: when full it is heavy and awkward on a ladder or in tight spaces.

Frequently asked questions

Plastic or metal?

Plastic is light and does not rust; metal is more resistant to knocks but heavier and must be kept dry. Mixed models combine the two.

What capacity do I need?

Weigh the tools you would put inside and choose a model with a higher capacity. A complete hand tool set weighs more than it looks: weigh it before you choose.

Can the latches be replaced?

For many models spare latches and other components are available. State the toolbox code when you ask for them.

What does the number in inches in the name mean?

It is the nominal length of the toolbox: 16" is about 40 cm, 19" about 48 cm. The actual dimensions in millimetres are on the data sheet and may differ slightly.

A toolbox with tools or an empty one?

The ready-made set is fine if you are starting from scratch and need the basic tools. If you already have your own tools, get an empty toolbox in the right size.
