How to choose a work trestle: load capacity, height and use
The right trestle depends on how much the workpiece you rest on it weighs and where you use it. In the collection the load capacities range from about 100 kg for the light models to over 1,100 kg for the sturdiest ones. For occasional jobs a pair of lightweight folding trestles is enough; for repeat cutting with a mitre saw or working heavy sheets you need an adjustable, stable model with a high load capacity.
The types
- Pair of folding metal trestles: they open and close in a few seconds and travel in the van. Example: the DeWalt DWST1-75676 trestle pair or the Stanley FatMax models.
- Multi-purpose and universal trestle: a folding structure with adjustable height, also used as a work surface or bench.
- Workpiece supports and roller stands: support the long workpiece as it comes out of the machine, with a side stop or rollers.
- Mitre saw stands: a universal support such as the Fervi S017 telescopic support holds mitre saws and bench saws, and pairs of mounting brackets for the mitre saw are also available.
- Wooden trestles and log sawhorses: in beech or spruce, for carpentry and for cutting logs.
- Portable scissor trestle: lightweight, for small jobs and occasional use.
How to choose by job
| Use | What to get | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Building site, constant moving around | Pair of folding metal trestles | Light, and they store in little space |
| Cutting with a mitre saw or bench saw | Universal support or trestle with brackets | The machine stays still and at the right height |
| Long pieces: beams, profiles, panels | Two trestles, or one plus a roller support | The piece does not tip over during cutting |
| Workshop and heavy work | Steel trestle with high load capacity | Supports heavy pieces without flexing |
| Joinery and firewood | Wooden trestle or log sawhorse | They hold the log still during cutting |
| Occasional use at home | Lightweight scissor trestle | Little weight and minimal bulk |
The features to look at
- Load capacity (kg): in the collection it ranges from about 100 kg to over 1,100 kg. Check whether the value is for a single trestle or for the pair.
- Height (mm): many models are adjustable, for example from 780 to 1,160 mm; others have a fixed height. The surface should come up to a height that is comfortable for your back.
- Weight: from about 1 kg for the simplest supports to 15 kg and more for the sturdy versions. If you move them every day, the weight matters as much as the load capacity.
- Material: aluminium (light), steel (sturdy), wood (beech, spruce).
- Dimensions and length: the size open and folded, and the length of the support surface for long pieces.
Common mistakes
- Looking only at the load capacity and not at the weight of the trestle itself. A 1,000 kg model that you cannot load into the van is one you will not use.
- Exceeding the load capacity. The declared load must not be exceeded, not even slightly.
- Using the trestle as a ladder or scaffold. It is not made to support a person.
- Placing it on uneven ground. If one leg does not touch, the trestle rocks and the workpiece shifts.
- Working long pieces with a single support. You need two points, or a roller support.
Frequently asked questions
How many trestles do I need for a beam?
At least two, spaced so that the beam does not sag. For very long pieces add a roller support at the outfeed.
Can I fix the mitre saw to a trestle?
Yes, but you need a support or mounting brackets designed for that model. An ordinary trestle does not guarantee stability while cutting.
Aluminium or steel trestle?
Aluminium if you move it often, steel if you work in a workshop with heavy pieces where load capacity and rigidity count.
How is the height locked?
With pins or levers, depending on the model. Before loading, check that the lock is engaged on all the legs.
