PVA glue or contact adhesive: how to choose
To glue wood and other porous materials you need a PVA glue: in the collection you will find it mainly in class D3 (EN 204), suitable for damp environments, and in D4 by mixing the D3 with a hardener, for frequent contact with water. For laminates, rubber and leather you need a neoprene contact adhesive instead, which is spread on both parts and gives an immediate grip with no chance to adjust. Pack sizes range from 30 g for small jobs to 22 kg for those who glue every day.
The types
- One-component PVA wood glue. Ready to use and water-based: you spread it on one part, join the pieces and clamp them. It is the choice for joinery, furniture, panels and wood repairs.
- Vinyl acetate glue and aqueous vinyl dispersion adhesive. These are water-based glues of the same kind, also available solvent-free, such as Carver Vinacol 0.5 kg. Formulation, water resistance and setting time differ: the real values are on the product page.
- Hardener for wood glue. It is not a glue: it is mixed with D3 to bring it up to class D4 and obtain a bond that stands up better to water.
- Contact adhesive, also in gel form. For laminates, rubber and leather. It is spread on both surfaces, left to become touch-dry and then the parts are joined by pressing hard.
- Fast-setting universal adhesive. For jobs where you cannot wait for the setting times of PVA glue.
How to choose by job
| Job | What to get | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Furniture and joinery indoors | D3 PVA wood glue | Solid bond on wood, clean-up with water |
| Kitchen, bathroom, repaired window frames | D3 PVA, or D3 plus hardener (D4) | Damp, splashes and condensation put the bond to the test |
| Worktops faced with laminate | Neoprene contact adhesive | Large surfaces are joined with immediate grip |
| Rubber, leather, repairs to footwear and gaskets | Contact adhesive, preferably gel | The gel drips less and is easier to control on vertical surfaces |
| Workshop or production | PVA glue in 5, 12 or 22 kg jerrycans | Fewer packs to handle, less waste |
| Occasional or hobby use | 30-250 g bottle | It is used up before the glue ages |
A good example for everyday work is the Unifix wood glue; for the vinyl dispersion adhesive there is also Carver Supervinilcol/V.
The features to look at
- Standard. The collection shows EN 204 D3, D4 and D2. The EN 204 standard classifies wood glues by water resistance: D2 for interiors with occasional damp, D3 for more frequent damp and splashes, D4 for frequent or prolonged contact with water. Some data sheets also show EN 71, which concerns toy safety and not water resistance. For a kitchen unit D3 is normally enough; for a window or an exposed element, look for D4.
- Type. It distinguishes one-component glue, hardener and contact adhesive. They are not interchangeable.
- Content. From 30 g to 1,000 g in the small packs, 5, 12 and 22 kg in the jerrycans. Choose according to how much you use in a couple of months.
- Colour. White or transparent for PVA glues, brown for some products. The colour after drying matters if the glue line remains visible.
- Material. For PVA glue it is wood and porous substrates in general.
Common mistakes
- Using PVA glue on plastic or metal. PVA glue works on porous materials; on smooth, non-absorbent surfaces it does not grip.
- Joining the contact adhesive too early. It must be left to become touch-dry on both surfaces. If you join the parts while the glue is still wet you lose the grip, and once the pieces are joined they cannot be moved again.
- Assuming D3 is fine outdoors. D3 is not D4: if the piece stays wet for a long time, you need the higher class.
- Removing the clamps too soon. PVA glue must be held under pressure until it has set; the times are on the product page.
- Spreading on dirty or damp surfaces. Dust, grease and water reduce the hold more than any difference between one brand and another.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove fresh PVA glue?
With water and a cloth, while the glue is still wet. Once it has set you have to scrape or sand it off.
Do I really need the hardener?
Only if the bond has to withstand frequent contact with water. For work in dry interiors D3 alone is sufficient.
Can I glue wood with contact adhesive?
Yes for facing wood with laminate, but to join two pieces of wood and obtain a structural joint, PVA glue with clamps is better.
What is the difference between PVA glue and vinyl acetate glue?
In use they are water-based glues of the same kind. Compare the resistance class, setting time and recommended substrates on the product pages.
