How to choose a universal laser-welded diamond blade: diameter and bore
If you need to cut concrete, bricks and stone with a single blade, the universal laser-welded diamond blade is the practical choice: its segments are laser-welded and you do not have to change blades for every material. The diameter is decided by the machine: from 115 to 230 mm for angle grinders, up to 450 mm for the larger saws. Before ordering, check two numbers: the bore diameter (22.2 mm for blades up to 230 mm, 25.4 mm for the larger ones) and the maximum speed printed on the blade, which must never be lower than that of your machine.
The types
- Universal laser-welded blade for angle grinders: the Laser Due and Laser Quattro models, like the Laser Quattro by Sea Technology, are the general-purpose blades for building sites and construction workshops.
- Silent versions: the Laser Quattro Silent and the Cantiere Tre Silent carry the word Silent in their name. If you work in environments where noise matters, read the data sheet to see what changes compared with the standard version.
- Turbo: the Turbo Tre, Quattro and Sei (for example the Turbo Quattro) have a wavy continuous rim. They are designed for a fast cut with a clean edge.
- Laser Scan for wall chasers: the Laser Scan Quattro is a diamond blade for electric wall chasers, that is, for cutting channels in walls and not for general cutting.
In the collection you will find Sea Technology blades and blades under the A.M.E.S. brand. You can tell the segment type in front of you from the model name and from the data sheet of the individual product.
How to choose by job
| Job | What to get | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Chases and small cuts on site with an angle grinder | Universal laser-welded blade, 115 or 125 mm | They are the smallest sizes in the range, suited to hand-held angle grinders. |
| Deeper cuts in masonry and concrete | Universal laser-welded blade, 180 or 230 mm | A larger diameter means a greater depth of cut, but you need a suitable machine. |
| Channels for electrical installations | Wall chaser blade, like the Laser Scan Quattro | It is the model designed for chasing. |
| Fast cutting with a clean edge | Turbo | The wavy continuous rim gives a fast and cleaner cut. |
| Large-diameter saw | Diameter from 300 to 450 mm | These are the large diameters in the range, with a 25.4 mm bore. |
If you only use the blade now and then, get a universal one: it costs less to keep a single blade than one blade for every material.
The features to look at
- Diameter: in the collection it runs from 115 to 450 mm. It must be the maximum allowed by your machine and its guard, never larger.
- Bore: 22.2 mm on diameters from 115 to 230 mm, 25.4 mm on diameters from 250 to 350 mm. Some codes also have a 30+4 bore: look at the code you order. A badly fitted reducer is a risk, so choose the right bore from the start.
- Thickness: from about 2.2 mm on the small blades up to 4.5 mm on the large ones. A thinner blade cuts with less effort, a thicker one holds up better on large diameters.
- Segment height: 7.5 or 10 mm. This is the diamond part that wears away: the taller it is, the longer the blade lasts.
- Dry use: the blades in the collection are rated for dry cutting.
To help you with the names: Due, Tre, Quattro and Sei are version numbers within the Sea Technology range. The data sheet of the individual product lists the diameters, bores and thicknesses available, because the same name covers several sizes. For example, some data sheets list diameters from 115 to 230 mm, others go up to 350 or 450 mm.
Common mistakes
- Fitting the blade the wrong way round: there is an arrow on the blade, and it must follow the direction of rotation of the machine.
- Ignoring the maximum speed: a blade fitted on a machine that runs faster than the speed marked on the blade can break.
- Forcing the cut or bending the blade: it overheats, deforms and loses segments. Feed steadily and let the diamond do the work.
- Not cooling the blade when cutting dry: after a few cuts, let the blade spin freely for a few seconds so it cools down.
- Working without protection: concrete and bricks produce a lot of dust. You need goggles, ear defenders and a mask, and it is best to suppress the dust with extraction or water.
Frequently asked questions
Is a universal blade good for everything?
It is good for concrete, bricks and stone, which are the materials it is designed for. For very repetitive jobs on a single material, a dedicated blade can last longer.
What is the difference between a laser-welded blade and a turbo blade?
Laser refers to the welding of the segments to the blade body. Turbo has a wavy continuous rim, which gives a fast cut with a clean edge. In the collection you will also find Turbo blades with laser-welded segments.
Can I use it with water?
The blades in this collection are rated for dry use. If you want to cut with water, check the model's data sheet before ordering.
How do I know when to replace it?
When the segment height is almost gone, or the blade is damaged or vibrates. Do not persist with a worn blade: it cuts badly and overheats.
