Frequently asked questions: Equipment for Arborists
Which fall arrest harness should I choose for pruning at height?

To work at height in trees you need a harness complying with EN 361, with a dorsal attachment point for fall protection. For positioning on the branch you need a specific work positioning and restraint system, to be used with the harness. Work at height requires training and instruction, as laid down by Italian Legislative Decree 81/2008 on workplace safety, and a check of the equipment before every use.

How do I use lanyards and energy absorbers when working in trees?

The lanyard complying with EN 354 connects the harness to the anchor point, while the energy absorber complying with EN 355 reduces the force transmitted to the body in a fall. Do not shorten the lanyard with knots and check that the absorber has not already been activated. Every component must be inspected before use and replaced if it shows cuts, deformation or wear.

Which pruning shears should I choose for thin branches and thicker branches?

Pruning shears are chosen according to the diameter of the branches to be cut: bypass shears, with a blade and counter-blade, work better on live branches, while anvil shears work better on dead ones. Rubberised handles reduce slipping and fatigue during long jobs. Fruit-picking shears, with a thinner blade, are designed to detach fruit without damaging the plant.

What is the difference between a grafting billhook and a grafting knife?

The grafting billhook has a curved, sturdier blade, suited to clean, angled cuts on branches and rootstocks. The grafting knife has a smaller, stiffer blade for precise incisions, while the double-blade model lets you work on two cuts. Blades should be kept sharp and clean between one graft and the next, so as not to transmit diseases to the plants.

Which hand saw should I use for pruning branches?

The small bow saw with a rotating blade is suited to medium-sized branches and lets you cut in awkward positions. The tubular bow saw, with a 530 to 900 mm blade, is for thicker branches and long cuts. Blades with teeth for green wood cut faster on live branches, and should be replaced when the teeth become blunt.

Which ladder should I choose for pruning trees and hedges safely?

The aluminium tripod ladder is designed for work with support on three points, useful in the garden and in the woods on uneven ground. Portable ladders must comply with EN 131 and be used only on a stable, level base. Do not stand on the top step and do not lean sideways; move the ladder instead when you need to reach another work area.

Which oil should I use for the fuel mix and for the chainsaw chain?

The mix for two-stroke engines must be prepared with the petrol-to-oil ratio specified by the engine manufacturer, measured with a graduated cylinder. Chain oil lubricates the bar and the chain of the chainsaw during work. Do not use car engine oil for the mix and store the mix in closed containers, away from heat sources.
