Compasses

Dividers and compasses are marking-out and measuring instruments: they are used to transfer distances, scribe circles and arcs, and check dimensions on metal, wood and other materials. The collection includes models from the Metrica brand, used in workshops, in metalwork and in joinery.

Types available

• Simple dividers, with the two legs held by a pivot.
• Quadrant dividers, with a graduated arc to lock the required opening.
• Outside spring calipers, useful for taking the external dimensions of a part, for example a diameter.

How to choose

The length of the legs determines the maximum opening: choose a pair longer than the dimensions you will need to mark. The quadrant model keeps the opening locked and is therefore more convenient for repetitive work, while the spring model is used to transfer an external dimension to another part or to a gauge. Also check that the points are well steel-tipped and can be resharpened.
