Compasses and Protractors
14 products · Analogue Measurement and Marking-Out
Compasses and protractors are marking-out and measuring instruments used in workshops, metalwork and building. Compasses are used to draw circles and arcs and to transfer distances, protractors to measure and check angles. In the collection you will find Fervi and Stabila products.
Types available
- Dividers (point compasses) in steel, in various lengths, also with a locking arc (Fervi).
- Electronic protractors, which show the angle on a digital display (Stabila).
- Other measuring instruments for angles and slopes.
How to choose
For compasses, the length of the legs sets the maximum opening, and therefore the largest radius you can draw. The locking arc allows the opening to be fixed. For protractors, consider the measuring range, the resolution of the reading and the sturdiness of the body, especially if the instrument is used on site. Electronic models are quicker to read, while mechanical ones need no batteries.

Frequently asked questions: Compasses and Protractors
What are Fervi magnetic V-blocks used for, and how do I use them?
Magnetic V-blocks hold workpieces in place, often round ones, on a metal surface. The magnetic base attaches them to the work surface, and the piece stays still without clamps, leaving your hands free. They are used for marking out, drilling and checking cylindrical pieces on a surface plate. They are tools for the workshop and for metalwork.
What is the difference between a 90-degree V-block and an adjustable V-block?
The 90-degree V-block has two reference faces at right angles, and is used to hold a workpiece square or to check its perpendicularity. The adjustable V-block lets you set the angle of support, useful when the workpiece must not always sit at the same inclination. The catalogue includes Fervi 90-degree and adjustable V-blocks in several sizes.
When is a pair of ground V-blocks needed instead of a single V-block?
Two V-blocks of the same height are used together to support long or cylindrical workpieces at two points, without the piece rocking. A ground pair, such as the Fervi ground V-block pair, gives a more even support because the faces are precisely finished. It is needed when you have to mark out or drill a long piece that cannot rest on a single support.
How do I clean and store a reference V-block?
Keep the bearing surfaces free of swarf, oil and dust, because a grain under the workpiece alters the measurement. Store them in a dry place with the faces protected from knocks, and not resting on dirty surfaces. Checking the flatness of the faces from time to time keeps them reliable over time, especially if the V-block is used often.
What are V-blocks for marking out and for checking on a surface plate?
On a surface plate, the V-block holds the workpiece still while the marker scribes lines with a scriber or a point. The plate is the reference base for all measurements. V-blocks let you repeat the same position on several pieces, reducing errors. They are used by workshop technicians, toolmakers and carpenters for precision work.
Which tools should I choose for measuring angles, besides V-blocks?
To measure inclinations or angles, the Stabila electronic protractors show the value on a digital display and give a direct reading of the angle. For simple angles a square or a mechanical protractor is enough. The choice depends on the precision required and the surface to be measured. The catalogue includes Stabila electronic protractors alongside Fervi V-blocks.
How do I fix a magnetic V-block to the work surface?
Place the V-block on a clean metal surface and turn it slightly so that the magnetic bases make good contact. Then set the workpiece on the seat and check that it is stable before marking out. Do not use the V-block on thick painted surfaces or non-ferromagnetic materials, because the grip is reduced. For heavy workpieces, add a safety stop.
