Ear Defenders and Earplugs for Hearing Protection

150 products · Head and Face Protection

Ear defenders and earplugs reduce the noise reaching the ear and prevent damage from prolonged exposure. They are used on site, in the workshop, in sawmills and when working with chainsaws and brush cutters.

Types in the collection

  • Headband and helmet-mounted ear defenders (Portwest, Husqvarna, Irudek, Kask, Neri)
  • Disposable earplugs, with or without cord (Portwest, Spasciani, Neri)
  • Banded earplugs with ear inserts and replacement pods
  • Hygiene kits and accessories for ear defenders (Irudek)

How to choose

Consider the noise level of the workplace and the attenuation stated on the data sheet: too little does not protect, too much isolates you from your surroundings. Ear defenders are quick to put on and suit people who take them on and off often; earplugs are lighter for long shifts. If you wear a helmet, choose ear defenders with a dedicated mount. The devices are marked according to the EN 352 series.

Frequently asked questions: Ear Defenders and Earplugs for Hearing Protection
Which ear defenders or earplugs protect hearing on site?

Ear muffs and earplugs reduce the noise reaching the ear and prevent damage from prolonged exposure. They are used on site, in workshops, in sawmills and with chainsaws and brushcutters. The choice between muffs and plugs depends on how often you enter and leave the noisy area.

Which standard applies to ear muffs and earplugs?

Ear muffs and earplugs are governed by the EN 352 series of standards, which covers hearing protectors. The different types, such as band-mounted muffs, helmet-mounted muffs and plugs, have their own attenuation requirements. The reference to the standard and the declared attenuation value must be found on the packaging.

How is the attenuation level of muffs and plugs chosen?

Assess the noise of the workplace, measured with a sound level meter or stated by the employer, and choose a protector with adequate attenuation. Too high an attenuation can isolate you from warning signals, so protection must be balanced against the need to hear. The attenuation value is stated on the packaging.

Band-mounted or helmet-mounted muffs: which to choose?

Band-mounted muffs work on their own, while helmet-mounted muffs clip onto the helmet with a dedicated attachment. The catalogue includes Kask helmet muffs, such as the SC2 and SC3, and Neri helmet attachments. Check the helmet model before choosing, because the attachment is not always compatible.

Corded plugs or disposable plugs: when to use them?

Disposable plugs are thrown away after use and must be inserted with clean hands. The corded plug does not get lost and attaches to the shirt, useful when it is removed and reinserted many times. Band-type inserts and replacement tips are reusable, with the tips to be replaced.

How do you clean and replace the pads of an ear muff?

The pads must be replaced when they harden, become dirty or lose grip, and the hygiene kit for muffs serves exactly this periodic replacement. The muff is cleaned with a damp cloth, without wetting the electronic part or the seals. Store the muff away from heat sources.

Do active or radio ear muffs protect as well as the others?

Active muffs, such as the xstream MP, attenuate loud noise and let useful sounds through, but the electronics do not replace the attenuation value. The value must always be checked on the model data sheet. Do not use them to reduce noise below the limits without a risk assessment.

Which ear muffs should be chosen for chainsaws and brushcutters?

For chainsaws and brushcutters, muffs with adequate attenuation are needed and, with a helmet, helmet-mounted muffs such as the Husqvarna protective ones. Engine noise is continuous and often high, so the duration of use also matters. Check that the muff does not interfere with the helmet visor.
