Frequently asked questions: Fischer
What are fischer anchors used for, and when is a chemical anchor better than a mechanical plug?
fischer anchors secure loads to masonry and concrete, such as brackets, supports, pipes and steel structures. A mechanical plug is suitable for light loads on solid, sound substrates. A resin chemical anchor is chosen for heavier loads, for fixings close to edges, or in perforated or weak substrates. Always check the substrate and the load before choosing.
How do I choose the hole diameter and length of a fischer plug?
Hole diameter and depth must match those given in the plug's data sheet, not approximate values. A hole that is too wide reduces holding strength; one that is too narrow prevents installation. Clean the dust out of the hole before inserting the plug and set it to the intended depth. For PO and MS brass plugs, as for the other models, follow the manufacturer's manual.
Which fischer wood screw should I choose: partial thread or full thread?
The collection includes ClassicFast and PowerFast screws with partial or full thread. A partial thread has an unthreaded shank close to the head and is used to clamp one piece onto another, pulling the head towards the upper piece. A full thread runs along the entire length and grips through the full thickness. Choose based on the thickness of the pieces and the strength required, then check the data sheet.
Which fischer screws are used for structural timber connections and reinforcements?
For structural timber connections and reinforcements, such as PowerFull CHTF and CTF screws, sizing must be carried out by the designer according to the product's European Technical Assessment (ETA) and Eurocode 5 for timber structures. Do not replace these screws with ordinary wood screws, and do not change the length or number of screws without verification.
What is the difference between neutral silicone sealant and fischer acetic sealant?
Neutral silicone sealant does not release an acidic odour during curing and is used on many materials, such as wood, painted metal and stone. Acetic sealant releases acetic acid, with a pungent smell, and is not suitable for sensitive metal surfaces or stone. Choose based on the joint material and read the data sheet before applying.
What is Cemento Espresso acrylic joint filler used for, and how does it differ from a sealant?
Acrylic joint filler fills cracks and small joints on surfaces to be finished, such as plaster and walls to be painted. A sealant, by contrast, is elastic and follows the movement of the joint over time. Filler on its own cannot withstand the movement of an expansion joint. Before applying, clean the substrate and check drying times and surface type on the data sheet.
How do I use the FIS-Rebar kit to bond reinforcing bars into deep holes?
The FIS-Rebar kit is used to bond reinforcing bars into deep holes in concrete, usually to connect new parts to existing structures. The hole must be cleaned carefully, as dust reduces bond, and the bonding must follow the times and temperatures given on the data sheet. Sizing is the designer's responsibility. Do not change diameters or depths from what is specified.
Which standards should I check for fischer anchors used in concrete?
For anchors in concrete, the reference is the European Technical Assessment (ETA) of the individual product, with its load data and conditions of use. Fixing calculations follow Eurocode 2. Check that the cracking of the concrete, the edge distance and the spacing are those set out in the assessment. If in doubt, consult the designer before installing.
