How to choose
The first check is the size: the width and length of the belt must match exactly those specified for the machine. Then choose the grit (coarse for stock removal, fine for finishing) and the type of abrasive according to the material: wood or metal.
Fit the belt following the direction of rotation marked on the back, where present, and replace it as soon as it stops cutting, to avoid overheating the workpiece. For different jobs it is worth keeping several grits of the same size to hand.

Frequently asked questions: Abrasive Belts for Belt Sanders
What are abrasive belts for belt sanders used for?
Closed-loop abrasive belts are fitted to portable belt sanders, file sanders and sharpening machines. They serve to rough, sand and finish wood and metal. The belt runs continuously, so it covers a large area and removes material evenly.
Which belt size should I buy?
The first check is the size: width and length must match exactly those specified by the machine. The range includes belts of 75 x 533, 76 x 457, 100 x 560 and 100 x 610 mm for belt sanders, and narrow belts of 330 x 10 or 457 x 13 mm for file sanders. A belt of the wrong size does not run correctly.
How do I choose the grit for wood and for metal?
For roughing, start with low grits; for sanding or finishing, move to higher grits. Wood is usually worked with finer grits, to avoid deep marks, while metal requires coarser grits to remove rust and burrs. Makita packaging states grits such as 40, 60, 80, 100 and 120.
What is the difference between a fabric belt and a cloth abrasive belt?
Fabric belts for polishing, such as the Milwaukee 330 x 10 and 457 x 13 mm, are designed for polishing and finishing. Cloth abrasive belts, by contrast, are for roughing and removing material. Cloth is tougher and more aggressive, fabric is softer. Choose the type according to the stage of work.
How do I use a belt sander safely?
Unplug the machine before changing the belt and check that the direction of rotation matches the one indicated. Wear glasses and a dust mask, with extraction if available. Do not press the workpiece hard onto the belt, because the belt overheats and can tear.
Which belt brands and sizes are available?
The range includes Makita belts in widths of 6, 9 and 13 mm, 533 mm long, with grits from 40 to 120 in packs of 5. There are also Fervi 440 x 35 mm belts, Milwaukee belts such as the 100 x 560 mm, and narrow belts for file sanders. Choose the size according to the machine you use.
Who uses these belts and for which jobs?
They are used by carpenters, restorers, metal fabricators and workshops to rough wood, remove rust and burrs from metal and prepare parts for painting. Those who sharpen blades or tools use them on sharpening machines. They are bench tools, typical of the workshop and the woodworking lab.
