How to choose
- Check the current and power draw of the loads to be connected before choosing plugs, sockets or extension leads.
- Check the plug and socket type (for example 10A or 16A Schuko) so that you use the right adapter.
- For cables and cable reels, consider the cross-section and length according to the distance to be covered.

Frequently asked questions: Domestic Electrical Supplies
Which plug or adaptor do I need for my appliance?
The choice of plug depends on the type of wall socket and the current of the appliance. Before buying an adaptor, read the rated current printed on the appliance, expressed in amperes, and check that the adaptor is suitable for that current. Do not use adaptors or multi-way sockets to connect high-power appliances, such as an oven or a heater, without first checking the rating of the device.
How do I earth an electrical system?
Earthing is done with an earth electrode, such as a hot-dip galvanised steel earth rod, connected to the system by an earthing conductor. The electrode must be sized and installed according to the design and standard CEI 64-8, and after installation it is advisable to measure its resistance. The soil makes a big difference to the result: in dry ground a longer electrode, or more than one, may be needed.
Which bare copper cable should I choose for earthing?
Bare copper is used for the earth connection, usually stranded, because it is flexible and easy to lay in the trench. The cross-section of the conductor must be the one required by the design and by standard CEI 64-8, without choosing the diameter by eye. Do not use bare conductors for ordinary electrical connections, because without insulation they can create dangerous contacts.
How do I choose a timer for lights or sockets?
Timers are chosen according to the type of programming: a daily timer repeats the same switch-on every day, while a weekly one handles different times on different days of the week. Indoor models must only be used in dry environments, while outdoors an adequate degree of protection is needed. Also check the maximum power the contact can handle, shown on the device, and do not exceed it with high loads.
Which motion detector should I choose?
A motion detector switches on lights or alarms when it senses a presence. IP44 models are mounted in places exposed to splashes, such as a porch, while those with an alarm are used to monitor a room. Position it away from heat sources and direct sunlight, which can cause false alarms, and at a height that covers the area to be monitored.
Is a GSM auto-dialler useful?
The GSM auto-dialler sends a call or an SMS to programmed numbers when an input is triggered, for example by a sensor or an alarm. It is used to report a fault even when nobody is in the building. Before buying, check that the SIM card is compatible with the network and that the device has a stable power supply, because a power cut stops it working.
How do I use a switched power strip safely?
Do not connect more appliances than the power strip is designed for and do not overload it with extension leads in series. Choose the power strip according to the total power of the appliances and keep the cables away from water and heat sources. If the plug or the cable gets hot, unplug it immediately and have the device checked before using it again.
