Frequently asked questions: Livestock and Animal Care
Which tools do I need for the daily care of animals?
For animal care you need tools such as the curry comb to clean the coat and the brush to remove dirt and hair. Cages for chickens and dogs are used to keep animals safely contained, during transport or as shelter. Choose tools made of durable materials that are easy to clean and disinfect after use.
How do I choose a cage for dogs or chickens?
The cage is chosen according to the size of the animal and the space available: the animal must be able to stand, turn round and move without being cramped. For chickens you need grids and a floor that are easy to clean, for dogs a structure with a door that closes securely and adequate ventilation. Check the internal and external dimensions before buying.
How do I use a hay net with horses?
A hay net stops the horse from eating off the ground and wasting forage. It should be hung in a position the animal can easily reach, and the mesh should be chosen according to the type of forage. Check the net often, because broken strands can injure the animal and must be replaced immediately.
How do I choose an ID tag for dogs or cats?
The tag is chosen according to the size of the animal, in a small or large format, and according to colour and shape. It carries the name and the owner's contact details. A tag does not replace the microchip, which for dogs is required by Italian regulations, nor registration in the animal registry.
How do I use a lead, swivel and brush safely?
The lead should be chosen according to the weight and temperament of the animal, while the coat brush is chosen in synthetic or natural material according to use. Check that the snap hook and the swivel are intact before every outing. Never leave the animal tied up unattended, and do not use worn leads.
How do I clean and disinfect a livestock housing area?
First remove the droppings and bedding, then wash with detergent and disinfect with a product suited to the use. Chemicals must be used according to the label, with the doses and contact times given by the manufacturer and with the safety data sheet to hand. Do not mix different products, because some combinations are dangerous.
Which curry comb should I choose for the coat?
The curry comb is chosen according to the type of coat and animal: softer teeth are suited to fine hair, stiffer ones to thick hair. The plastic handle is lighter, the metal one more durable. Clean the curry comb after every use, so as not to pass dirt and parasites from one animal to another.
