How to choose a rope access device: descender or ascender?
A rope access device does one of three things: it lets you descend (descender), it lets you climb or locks you in place (ascender, handle, rope clamp), or it stops you in the event of a fall (sliding fall arrester). The first selection criterion is the function, the second is the standard stated on the data sheet, for example EN 12841 for rope adjustment devices, EN 567 for rope clamps, EN 341 for rescue descenders, EN 353-2 for fall arresters on a flexible anchor line. The third is the rope: use only the type and diameter approved by the manufacturer, and only if you are trained in rope access work.
The types
- Self-braking descenders: used to descend along the rope while controlling speed. The collection includes Petzl models such as the I'D L, the I'D Evac and the RIG.
- Load-lowering descenders: designed for lowering loads, like the Maestro L and the Maestro S.
- Ascenders and rope clamps: they lock on the rope in one direction and slide in the other. The collection includes ascending handles and foot loops.
- Guided fall arresters: they slide along a rope or a flexible anchor line and lock in the event of a fall.
- Pulleys, foot loops and handles: accessories for moving about and for building rescue systems.
- Escape kits: for example the EXO AP Hook escape kit, for emergency descent.
- Cordless winch: the Husqvarna x Skylotec Power Ascender for climbing the rope under motor power.
- Spare parts: slings, screws, axles and other parts to keep the devices in good order.
How to choose by job
| Job | What to get | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Rope access work on façades or structures | EN 12841-C self-braking descender plus a guided fall arrester | One to descend, one as a safeguard in case of error. |
| Work with ropes of different diameters | Device approved for that rope | The rope diameter changes how the device behaves. |
| Climbing up the rope | Handle ascender or rope climber | Lets you climb by using the grip on the rope. |
| Lowering materials or an injured person | Load-lowering descender | It is made to manage the weight on the way down. |
| Emergency team | Escape kit and rescue descender | They are for evacuating quickly from a work position. |
The features to look at
- Standard: the data sheets show EN 12841, EN 567, EN 341, EN 353-2, EN 12278 (pulleys), EN 795 (anchor devices). The suffix of EN 12841 indicates the function: B for adjustment, C for descent. Check that the standard covers the intended use.
- Approved rope: type and diameter are specified by the manufacturer. A wrong rope cancels the performance of the device.
- Material: aluminium, stainless steel, polyamide, depending on the part. Steel lasts longer, aluminium weighs less.
- Weight: from a few grams (accessories) to over 600 g. If you carry it on you all day, weight matters.
- Warranty: some models state 3 years.
Two practical points. First: the same data sheet may list several standards, because a device can cover more than one use; read which one relates to the function you need. Second: a rope system is made up of several parts (rope, harness, connectors, device) and is only as strong as its weakest part, so choose the device with the rest of the equipment you already have in mind.
Common mistakes
- Using ropes that are not approved: the device works only with the ropes specified by the manufacturer.
- Fitting it the wrong way round: the direction is marked on the body.
- Not testing the locking before loading it: always carry out a locking test.
- Connecting it without a screw-gate connector: you need a connector with a safety closure.
- Not checking for wear: after use, look at the cams, pulleys and rope.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a course to use them?
Yes. These devices must be used by personnel trained in rope access work, because a fitting error has serious consequences.
Are a descender and an ascender the same thing?
No. The descender controls the descent; the ascender locks on the rope and is used to climb or to secure yourself.
Can I use the device with any harness?
The connection must be made to the attachment points specified by the harness and the manufacturer, with a screw-gate connector. If in doubt, ask before ordering.
How often should it be checked?
Before each use, with a visual check. For periodic inspection, follow the manufacturer's instructions.
