Frequently asked questions: Delineators, Kerbs, Posts and Bollards
What are road delineators, kerb markers and bollards used for?

Delineators, posts, kerbs and bollards guide traffic, mark lanes and protect pedestrians and pedestrian areas. A bollard prevents unauthorised access or parking, a speed bump reduces vehicle speed and a delineator marks the edge of the carriageway. Choose the type according to the task it must perform on the road or in the yard.

Which standard applies to road barriers and guardrails?

For road restraint systems the European reference is EN 1317, which classifies systems by containment level and deflection. The guardrail in the range, class N2 and installed on an embankment, falls within this family. Before installing a barrier, check the required level with the designer or with the road authority.

Which bollard should be chosen to prevent parking on a pedestrian area?

To prevent parking on a pedestrian area or a parking space, the range offers fixed bollards in concrete and polyethylene, such as the Tunisi concrete bollard from Bonfante, and reinforced parking-space barriers. Removable bollards, such as the Rototec, can be moved when needed and leave the passage clear. Consider whether the area must always remain closed or only be open at certain times.

What is the difference between a kerb marker and a pedestrian post?

A kerb marker is a low element that separates two areas, often with reflective inserts, such as the recycled rubber wheel stop with yellow inserts. A pedestrian post is vertical and is used to protect the pavement or mark off a pedestrian passage. The wheel stop is used at the end of the parking space for vehicles, the post where a vertical barrier is needed.

How are fixed bollards and speed posts installed?

Speed posts and fixed bollards require a base or a ground anchor, such as the concrete base for the two-colour post. The type of fixing depends on the ground, whether asphalt, concrete or paving, and on the intended use. Before drilling holes or digging, check for underground services and obtain the permits from the competent authority.

How do road studs, or cat’s eyes, work on the surface?

Road studs are reflectors that mark the centre line or the edges of the carriageway, and the LED version reflects or lights up at night. The solar version requires no cabling, as it draws its energy from light. They are fixed to the asphalt with adhesive or resin, following the manufacturer’s instructions and the rules of the road concerned.

Is a rubber speed bump suitable for a private car park?

The Speed Stop hexagonal rubber speed bump from Sisas, or the parking deterrent from Tekcnoplast, are suitable for private car parks, courtyards and industrial areas with slow traffic. They are laid with plugs or ballast depending on the surface. Check the height and profile against the vehicles passing over them, because a speed bump that is too high can damage lower vehicles.
