Shears and secateurs for the garden and grounds maintenance: pruning branches and hedges, by hand or with cordless tools.
Types available
- Bypass pruning shears and secateurs, with blades that pass each other like scissors, also with holster (Milwaukee, Verdelook).
- Loppers and long-handled branch cutters for thicker branches (A.M.E.S., Verdelook).
- Hedge shears, also telescopic (Verdelook).
- Cordless pruning shears, with or without battery set (Kärcher, Milwaukee).
How to choose
The diameter of the branches to be cut matters: secateurs are enough for thin ones, while thick ones call for loppers or cordless shears. If you prune often, the cordless version reduces effort. Check the grip and the weight of the tool.
Maintenance extends the life of the tool: after use it is worth cleaning the sap off the blades, sharpening them when the cut becomes ragged and lubricating the moving parts.

Frequently asked questions: Scissors
What are secateurs used for?
Secateurs cut branches and stems for garden care, from pruning roses and hedges to small twigs that need removing. They are chosen according to the diameter of the branch: for thin ones secateurs are enough, for thicker ones you need loppers. A clean cut is preferable to a ragged one, because it leaves the plant cleaner at the point of the cut.
What are bypass secateurs?
Bypass secateurs have two blades that slide past each other, like tailor's scissors, and cut cleanly without crushing the branch. They are suited to precision pruning of live branches and green stems. In the collection you will find Milwaukee and Verdelook models, some with a sheath to wear on the belt.
Which loppers should I choose, fixed-handle or telescopic?
Fixed-handle loppers are stiffer and more precise on thick branches, while telescopic ones let you reach high branches without a ladder. Ratchet versions multiply the cutting force, useful for thicker branches. In the collection you will find telescopic and fixed-handle loppers, some with a ratchet: choose the length according to the height of the plants you need to prune.
When do you need hedge shears?
Hedge shears are used to trim hedges and bushes with regular, repeated cuts. The telescopic version reaches the top of the hedge without a ladder. For hedges a long, straight blade is best, as it gives straight-line cuts. In the collection you will find Verdelook hedge shears, including telescopic ones, and cordless shears for longer jobs.
How do you use secateurs safely?
Wear work gloves and safety glasses, because dry branches and blades can slip or splinter. Position the blade on the side of the part to be removed and do not cut branches above your head without a stable ladder. Put the secateurs back in their sheath when you are not using them and clean the blades after every use.
Which cutting tools are needed for the vegetable patch and the garden?
For the vegetable patch and the garden, secateurs and fruit-picking snips are enough, with a small blade for harvesting fruit and flowers without damaging the branch. For hedges and shrubs you need hedge shears, while for thick branches use loppers. In the Verdelook collection you will find secateurs, fruit-picking snips and loppers to cover the most common gardening jobs.
