What it is

The joint backer rod is a round cord of compressible material, such as expanded polyethylene or rock wool, inserted into joints as a backing for the sealant or, in the fire-resistant type, to close the joint against fire.

What it is for

Used for insulation work and for sealing joints, gaps and service penetrations.

How to use it

Choose a diameter slightly larger than the width of the joint and press it in to the required depth with a blunt tool that will not puncture it. Then apply the sealant over it.
