What it is

A band saw is a machine with a continuous loop blade for cutting metal, sections or wood; it comes as a fixed, bench or workshop machine, and as a portable cordless version. It also includes inspection tools such as the blade tension gauge.
What it is for
Used in steel fabrication, from cutting to assembly, for cutting metal sections, sheet and tube and for cutting metal and plastic pipes.
How to use it
Fit the blade with the teeth pointing in the cutting direction, tension it to the stated value and bring the guides close to the workpiece. On fixed machines, clamp the workpiece in a vice (metal) or push it against the fence (wood), select the speed and use cutting fluid on metal. On portable saws, clamp the workpiece firmly and hold the machine with both hands, letting the blade do the work without pushing. Keep your hands away from the blade, using a push stick where needed, and release the blade tension if the machine is to stand idle for a long time.
