What it is

The water level is a flexible tube filled with water with a transparent vial at each end; it exploits the fact that water settles at the same level at both ends to transfer points to the same height even over a great distance.

What it is for

Used for levelling surfaces and structures and for setting out and in masonry work, from laying blocks to filling chases.

How to use it

Fill the tube with water, often coloured, removing any air bubbles, and bring the two ends to the points to be compared. Read the water levels in the two vials: when they coincide with the reference marks, the points are at the same height. Keep the tube free of kinks, and empty and dry it after use.
