What it is
A cutting tool for large-diameter holes, the Fervi ST2A49 taper shank twist drill measures 49 mm and has a taper shank for direct use on machines with a Morse taper spindle. Made to DIN 345/N, with a 118° point angle and a hardness of 700-740 HV, it is designed to withstand the stresses typical of drilling thick sections.
A metal drill bit is an HSS or cobalt twist drill, with a straight or taper shank, for drilling steel, non-ferrous metals and plastics.
What it is for
Used for drilling steel, stainless steel and aluminium, on a pillar drill or with a hand-held drill and in workshop machining of steel, aluminium and alloy parts.
How to use it
Clamp the workpiece in a vice, mark the centre and set the speed for the diameter and material: low for hard steels and large diameters, higher for aluminium and plastic. Lubricate with cutting oil on steel; on plastic, reduce the pressure as the bit breaks through to avoid chipping. Insert taper-shank drills into the pillar drill's spindle taper and remove them with a drift.
